Seen a slim band just below someone's kneecap at parkrun, on the padel court or in the squat rack? That's a patella strap. It looks simple, and it is. Here is what it is, where it sits and who tends to wear one.
What does "patella strap" mean?
The patella is your kneecap. A patella strap is named after where it sits: just under it, wrapped around the top of the shin. It is a narrow band, not a tube that covers the whole knee.
You will see a few names when shopping: patella band, knee band, knee strap. Wording varies between brands, so check the photos. A band designed for the thigh or calf is a different thing.
Kneecap
The landmark above the strap. Leave it uncovered.
Front pad
Sits just below the kneecap.
Band
Wraps flat around the top of the shin.
Simplified landmarks only. Follow the instructions for your strap.
Who wears a patella strap?
Pretty much anyone who moves a lot and wants something on the knee that does not get in the way.
- Runners: from 5k to long Sunday miles, a strap stays put without trapping heat like a full sleeve.
- Padel and tennis players: quick lunges, split steps and changes of direction. Low profile means it does not catch on anything.
- Gym and strength training: squats, lunges, step ups, box jumps. Some lifters like the snug feel during leg day.
- Hikers and walkers: long days, uneven trails and plenty of steps.
- Everyday movers: stairs, commutes and busy days on your feet.
The common thread is a preference for a light, focused feel rather than wrapping the whole joint. If that sounds like you, a strap is worth a look.
Where should the strap sit?
The front pad goes just beneath the kneecap, not across the middle of it and not halfway down the shin. Use the instructions that come with your strap for the final position.
- Find the landmark. Sit down, relax the leg and find the bottom edge of your kneecap.
- Place the pad. Line it up just below that edge, with the band level around the leg.
- Fasten it. Aim for snug and secure, not as tight as it will go.
- Move. Stand, bend, take a few steps. Recheck the position and adjust if needed.
If it feels too tight or uncomfortable, loosen it off. Cranking the strap tighter does not make it work harder. If it keeps sliding, check the position and that the band is lying flat before you pull harder.

Patella strap or knee sleeve?
A sleeve is a fabric tube that surrounds the knee. A strap is a narrow band below the kneecap. That changes how it feels, how it fits under kit and how you put it on.
- Coverage: a strap leaves most of the knee open. A sleeve covers it.
- Heat: less fabric usually means a cooler feel on long sessions.
- Under kit: a slim strap disappears under leggings, joggers and long socks more easily.
- On and off: wrap and fasten versus pulling a tube over your foot.
Neither is better for everyone. It comes down to what you like on your knee. For the full breakdown, read knee strap vs knee sleeve vs knee brace.
